Oct. 1, 2019 – For Immediate Release

AFDC: Project Diversity and the LA Throwback Foundation announce a partnership for the Color of Ultimate.

Project Diversity is thrilled to bring the Color of Ultimate to the 2020 LA Throwback Beach Ultimate Fest on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, January 18-19 2020, in Santa Monica, CA. Project Diversity will be fielding two elite-level teams featuring many of the Color of Ultimate: ATL players. Both Color of Ultimate teams will compete in the top division at LA Throwback, and will be featured in a showcase game between the two teams UNDER THE LIGHTS on Saturday evening. [update: due to weather concerns, we will be moving the game to daylight hours].

The goal of this partnership is to bring the success of the Color of Ultimate initiative to the Southwest United States and the beach ultimate scene, and to further advance the missions of both Project Diversity and the LA Throwback Foundation.

There are a limited number of open Color of Ultimate roster spots available to help fill out the two teams. Applications for those open roster spots will be posted later this week. Players who identify as People of Color are encouraged to apply. Since one of the goals of this showcase game is to strengthen the Color of Ultimate presence in the Southwest United States, players who live in California, Arizona, and Nevada will be prioritized.

As of this writing, a small number (<16) of available bids remain for LA Throwback 2020. Teams interested in coming to play, to check out the Color of Ultimate showcase game, and get to know us should register a team here as soon as possible. We look forward to a vibrant sideline for the showcase game, where pizza will be served at halftime, courtesy of LA Throwback.

The mission of AFDC: Project Diversity committee is to help people of all socioeconomic and racial backgrounds access and enjoy the opportunities and benefits of ultimate. Although Project Diversity is based in Atlanta, we encourage our mission to be spread in communities across the country and around the world.

The Color of Ultimate: ATL was an all-star showcase ultimate game, held in Atlanta on June 22nd, 2019, featuring many of the country’s (and South America’s) most talented players of color, with the goal of raising awareness about the socioeconomic and racial inequity of the sport of ultimate. The game was a great success! Here are the full game video footage, highlights, and the game’s accompanying documentary.

The LA Throwback Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity committed to service, community, and financial transparency. Proceeds from our annual Beach Ultimate Fest go to promote the playing and teaching of ultimate and the civic engagement of our community. We seek to involve as much of the local ultimate community as possible as beneficiaries, stakeholders, and participants in producing our events. For 2020, one of our key partners and funding recipients is the 99’s, Los Angeles’ newly formed professional women’s ultimate team. More broadly, LA Throwback seeks to stimulate and support young players to become organizers and leaders in our sport. We specifically want to help change the demographics of ultimate – a product of larger societal patterns of institutional racism in education, housing, and more – to reflect those of the larger communities in which we live. Please check out our Ultimate Community Support Fund and Ultimate Everywhere program announcements for more info on these efforts.
